Well, of the past decade, I would have to say one of the better rivalries has been between Ohio State and Wisconsin... it always seems to be a tough grind em out game. I also like the Florida and Louisiana State rivalry. SEC competition has been at it's highest level the past eight years or so and that's helped fuel this southern rivalry.
OSU is 5-3 against Wisconsin in the 2000's with an average margin of victory of 9.5 points. I wouldn't exactly call the games close on paper. However, if you look back at the film, especially in the early part of the decade, you'll see some "grind em out guys". The likes of Will Allen and A.J. Hawk on defense for OSU with Maurice Clarett (R.I.P.) on offense. Wisconsin had Brooks Bollinger, the current gunslinger the Florida Tuskers (Go UFL!), but also really solid teams all around. In all honesty, I completely agree that OSU-Wisconsin has been one of the better college football rivalries this decade.
Ohio State just lost to the Purdue Boilermakers... I have been saying all week that Ohio State does not deserve it's #7 ranking. Their offense is 110th out of 120 teams. Needless to say, Terrel Pryor and Jim Tressel combined to take the biggest shit in West Lafayette today. Tressel should have sat Pryor after the first series, instead he went with the sophmore who accounted for 4 turnovers alone. Next time maybe Tress will go with the backup. They're not paying me millions to make those decisions, so ill just continue to aire my grievances on rankandfilesports.
Although this rivalry might not come to the minds of most when considering matchups on the 2000s, West Virginia and Louisville have battled over the last several years. Yes, Louisville only joined the Big East in 2005, their games against WVU have been significant. While both team fought for Big East supremecy in 2005 and 2006, WVU came out on top in '05 in a 46-44 triple overtime thriller, and UL revenged with a 44-34 win in 2006. WVU went 2-0 in '07 and '08.
@DudeNick4: I'm beginning to think this is what we to are accept as the new norm in college football - top ten teams losing an in-conference game to an unranked team. It happened to Florida last year, Ohio State this year and seemingly every year to USC. And there are countless other examples over the last few years.
On a separate note regarding OSU, over the past 5 years I really thought they have made a half ass attempt at strengthening their schedule. They added USC and Washington to their schedule only to add Youngstown State. And the one-and-one with the MAC every year isn't helping them either. I guess if they are simply destined to lose at least on game every year and phone it in come January, what's the point?
Well, as far as the strength of schedule goes... those are made up to 7 years in advance... they have a home and home with Miami, Oklahoma, Cal... err... not really a step up... and I think Va Tech. I'm just going off memory so dont excoriate me if i'm wrong, but I know for sure about the u and OU as well as Cal. I agree though, Ohio State always seems to lose an easy one... and then get smoked in the bowl game. At the end of this season, the Bucks will have 4 losses and will hopefully be able to beat South Carolina in the Outback bowl... but the last two times they played in the Outback bowl, USC has come out on top... look for more of the same this year.
Guys, even though I enjoyed reading about OHST, let's get back to the rivalries. I'm sure Gator fans will hate this. UF played their interstate rivals from Miami five times in the 2000s. Interestingly, the advantage went to the U (4-1). 2001: Miami 37-20 (Sugar Bowl) 2002: Miami 41-16 2003: Miami 38-33 2004: Miami 27-10 (Peach Bowl) 2008: UF 26-3 The all-time series beginning in 1938 is much closer with Miami leading 28-26. This is probably not the greatest rivalry of the 2000s, but I thought it was an interesting one. Let's hope they meet again soon.
The concept of Rank and File Sports is simple. We give the topic, and you provide the list! The only requirement is your opinion. We will keep the topics fresh and interesting, and add stats or other helpful information. Topics will routinely involve sports and athletes, obviously, but look for the occasional curveball. Enjoy the site, and don't forget to leave your thoughts before you exit.

Miami - Florida State! Every game is a classic, lots of talent on the field.
